The foot and ankle take the majority of the load throughout our lives. From standing, walking, dancing or running, they can really take a beating over time. Because of this, they are susceptible to many different injuries.
Tendons around the foot and ankle can be prone to fraying and wearing down over time (tendinopathy) and can be a source of chronic pain. Over time, the arch of the foot can begin to collapse if the support of the tendons is lost.
The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue extending from the heel to the toes, supporting the arch of the foot. The tissue can become inflamed and cause significant heel pain if the foot is overstretched or overused. Patients who have flat feet or high arches are more susceptible to developing this condition.
The cartilage of the foot and ankle can be broken down over time through normal activity or as a result of injuries such as frequent ankle sprains or a previous fracture. This process is called arthritis and it can become very painful when so much of the cartilage is lost that the underlying bone and nerve endings are exposed.
Many patients with foot and ankle pain will improve or control their pain with conservative treatments such as icing, stretches and shoe inserts. A small number of patients will continue to experience chronic pain, and won’t respond well to conservative measures.
When conservative measures have failed, a large number of patients have benefited from in-office treatments platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections or stem cell treatments for their condition.
